What does “PDF to Notion” mean here?
It means a Markdown file that Notion’s own importer understands, so your PDF lands as a page you can edit, not as a wall of text with a line break on every row.
Notion does not open PDFs as editable pages. You can attach a PDF to a page, but you cannot select a heading in it, reorder a list or turn a row of numbers into a table. To get something you can work with, the text has to become Markdown first.
ocrtomarkdown reads the PDF (scanned or not), tidies the text, and formats it for Notion: plain Markdown with no HTML, a single title, headings that stop at three levels, and tables kept as Markdown tables. You import the file with Notion’s Text & Markdown option.

What survives the trip into Notion
Notion’s help page says its Markdown import covers plain text and standard Markdown, including headings, lists and code blocks. Here is how that lines up with what you get from us.
| In your PDF | In Notion |
|---|---|
| Title and headings | One title, then headings in order. We stop at three levels (#, ##, ###). Notion’s help page says H4 and deeper become Heading 3 when you import HTML, and gives no separate rule for Markdown. |
| Paragraphs | Joined back together. Blank-line breaks stay. |
| Bulleted and numbered lists | Nested the way the page was. Bullets like • and ◦ and numbers like 1) are normalised first. |
| Tables | Kept as Markdown tables. Notion’s help page does not mention tables for Markdown, so check yours after importing. If one arrives as plain text, paste it into a page instead. |
| Bold, italics, links | Kept when the converter can see them, as Markdown. Links that jump around inside the PDF have no Markdown form, so they are not part of the note. |
| Pictures and diagrams | Left out. You get the text and tables around them. |
| Equations | Text equations come through as text. An equation that could not be read is marked [equation not read]. |
| Page numbers and running headers | Removed when the same line repeats three or more times. |
Notion’s help page also lists file size limits for imports (5 MB per file on the free plan, 50 MB on paid plans) and a rate limit on how many files you can import in 12 hours. A Markdown file made from a PDF is far below the size limit. Check Notion’s page for the current numbers.
Three ways to get a PDF into Notion
You can retype it, run it through a plain text converter, or let ocrtomarkdown tidy it for Notion.
| Compared on | Retyping by hand | Generic OCR | ocrtomarkdown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Effort | Type or paste row by row | Convert, then fix by hand | Drop, check, import |
| Paragraphs | Rebuilt as you type | A block per printed line | Joined back into paragraphs |
| Headings | Set by hand | Plain text, or all at one level | One title, then three levels at most |
| Tables | Built cell by cell | Rows of loose text | Markdown tables, rows padded to match |
| Imports as pages | Not needed | Depends on the file format | A .md file for Notion’s Text & Markdown import |
| Repeated headers | Skipped | Scattered through the text | Removed |
PDF to Notion: your questions
How do I import the Markdown file into Notion?
Open Settings in Notion, choose Import, then Text & Markdown, and pick the .md file you downloaded. Notion creates a new page from it.
Can I paste instead of importing?
Yes. Click Copy Markdown and paste into an empty Notion page. Notion converts most Markdown as it lands. If a table comes in as plain text, use the import route for that file.
Does Notion keep my tables?
We send tables as Markdown tables with every row padded to the same width. Notion’s help page lists headings, lists and code blocks for Markdown import and does not mention tables, so glance at yours after importing. If one is wrong, email [email protected] with the layout and we will look at it.
Why does the note stop at three heading levels?
Notion’s help page says that when you import HTML, H4 and deeper headings become Heading 3. It gives no separate rule for Markdown, so rather than leave it to chance the Notion format keeps three levels (#, ##, ###) and puts anything deeper at the third level.
Will page numbers and running headers appear in my Notion page?
No. When the same line turns up three or more times, such as a course name at the top of each page or “Page 4 of 12”, we remove it. If a paragraph was cut in half by a page break, the two halves are stitched back together.
Is there a size limit for importing into Notion?
Notion sets the limit. Its help page says 5 MB per file on the free plan and 50 MB on paid plans, plus a limit on how many files you can import in a short time. A 150-page PDF still makes a text file well under 5 MB.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Yes. Scanned pages are read with OCR before the tidy-up. A straight, sharp scan gives the best result. Photos of handwriting are hit and miss, so we do not promise them.
How many PDFs can I convert for Notion for free?
3 files a day, up to 10 pages each, without an account. Pro is $6 a month for 150 files a month, files up to 150 pages.
What does the file look like before I import it?
Use the Preview tab to see it with headings, lists and tables, or the Markdown tab to see the plain text that Notion will read.
Are my files kept?
Your file is read out of memory and destroyed when the Markdown is sent back. A page that will not read is handed to Google's vision API as an image; Google may hold it and the Markdown returned as abuse-monitoring records, kept 55 days at the outside. Nothing is used for training.
